What Is the Chinese Gender Predictor?

The Chinese gender predictor is a traditional method that guesses your baby's gender using your lunar age and the lunar month when you conceived. The chart it is based on is said to be around 700 years old. A lot of parents swear it got it right for them, even though science says it is basically a coin toss.

It is also called the Chinese gender calendar or the Chinese lunar calendar method. Some families pull it up at baby showers. Others just try it out of curiosity in early pregnancy. Either way, it takes about two minutes and costs nothing at all.

How Does It Work?

You enter your date of birth and your conception date. Our tool automaticaly converts those into lunar dates and checks them against the Chinese baby gender chart. The chart matches your lunar age at conception with your lunar conception month to give you a prediction.

You do not need to figure out your lunar dates yourself. The calculator sorts all of that out for you.

Should You Utilize A Chinese Gender Calendar?

You may leverage this gender prediction tool as an informal approach to determine your baby’s probable gender. This test can be executed amongst family members or friends through an unintended intent or hand-picked as a gender-guessing game in baby showers.

However, you must not depend solely on the results or reflect the test outcomes as a standby for a medical process, as this methodology is not 100% dependable.

For Example, as per the Gregorian-Lunar calendar:

  • If your birth date is January 15, 1989. Your lunar birth date will be December 8, 1988.
  • If your conception date is June 5, 2018. Your lunar conception date will be April 22, 2018.
  • As per your lunar age and conception month, you are probable to have a baby girl.

How Accurate Is the Chinese Gender Predictor?

Honestly? About 50-50. The same as guessing. Some websites claim it is 70% to 90% accurate, but no proper scientific study has backed that up. A few small studies tested it and found no result better than chance.

That said, plenty of mums will tell you it was spot on for them, and that is part of why it is so popular at baby showers and family get-togethers. If it turns out to be right, great. If not, at least you had a fun guess to talk about. Use it for the fun of it. For the real answer, wait for your anomaly scan around 18 to 20 weeks.

Why Do Indian Parents Use This Tool?

In India, finding out a baby's sex through medical tests is not allowed by law under the PCPNDT Act, and for good reason. But that does not stop parents from wanting to guess and have a bit of fun about it during pregnancy.

The Chinese gender predictor is one of the most popular ways to do that. It is completely non-medical, totally harmless, and gives you something fun to chat about with family. Many mums-to-be try it at their baby shower alongside other gender prediction games. We at R for Rabbit fully support gender equality and do not encourage sex determination in any form. This tool is purely for entertainment.

A Brief History of the Chinese Gender Chart

The Chinese gender chart is believed to have been created during the Qing dynasty, which ruled China from around 1644 to 1911. The original chart was said to be kept inside the royal palace and not shared with the public.

During the fall of the Qing dynasty, the chart was reportedly taken out of the palace along with other royal items. Over time, it was translated and studied by scholars, and eventualy made its way to the Institute of Science in Beijing, where researchers in Asia and the West took a closer look at it.

The chart has loose connections to the I Ching, which is one of China's oldest texts. Ideas about yin and yang, the five elements, and balance are said to influence how the chart works. Whether all of that history is fully accurate or not, the chart has been around for a very long time, and people are still using it today.

How Is Chinese Lunar Age Calculated?

This is a bit different from what most of us are used to. In the Chinese system, a baby is considered one year old at birth, because the time in the womb counts. A year is then added not on your birthday, but on Chinese New Year.

So your Chinese lunar age is usually one or two years more than your regular age. The exact number depends on whether you were born before or after Chinese New Year in your birth year, and which month you conceived. Our tool on this page handles all of this automatically. Just put in your birth date and conception date and it takes care of the rest.

Does the Chinese Gender Calendar Change Every Year?

No, the Chinese gender calendar chart itself stays the same every year. What changes is how your lunar age and lunar conception month land on the chart, because the lunar calendar shifts slightly each year compared to the regular calendar.

So the chart is the same, but your personal inputs change based on when you conceived. A Chinese gender calendar 2026 and a Chinese gender predictor 2027 both use the same traditional chart. They just make it easier to enter dates from that year. Our tool works for conceptions in both 2026 and 2027.
